SETI Institute की Fall 2026 field season team Lake Untersee लौट रही है। अभियान का प्रमुख लक्ष्य 2–3 metre sediment cores लेकर lake history, geochemistry और microbial ecosystems का अध्ययन करना है।
Lake Untersee की विशेषताएँ
- East Antarctica के Queen Maud Land में remote, permanently ice-covered freshwater lake.
- unusual microbial mats और large conical stromatolite-like structures के लिए प्रसिद्ध।
- perennial ice cover atmosphere के साथ gas exchange सीमित करता है; radiocarbon chronology में reservoir effect पैदा हो सकता है।
Astrobiology महत्व
Extreme cold, isolation, low nutrient conditions और microbial communities early Earth तथा Mars/icy moons पर संभावित biosignatures के analog प्रदान करते हैं। वैज्ञानिक sediment dating के लिए radiocarbon के साथ independent methods जैसे luminescence dating का उपयोग करना चाहते हैं।
